Keith J. Connell, PhD, MBA

Keith J. Connell is a full-time professor in the Design and Visual Arts department at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario, where he teaches in the Digital Content Creation and Strategy program. His courses span web design, web strategies, content strategy, accessibility, business communication, entrepreneurship, and project management.

His PhD research is in Educational Leadership and policy and his MBA is in Leadership and Innovation, and brings approximately thirty years of professional marketing experience to his academic practice. That convergence of industry depth and scholarly rigour defines everything he does in the classroom, in research, and in the advisory work he undertakes through his consulting practice.

His doctoral research examines international student persistence in Ontario colleges during the post-cap period, with particular attention to the structural, social, and institutional conditions that determine whether students remain enrolled and succeed. It is work that matters to him not as an abstract scholarly exercise, but because the students in his courses represent the precise population his research is designed to understand and serve.

Professional Readiness Is Not a Destination. It Is a Practice.

Every course Keith teaches is designed around a single conviction which is that students deserve instruction that prepares them for the professional world they are actually entering, not a simplified approximation of it. That means real tools, real constraints, real expectations, and real feedback.

He uses the BOPPPS instructional design methodology consistently across his courses, building participation opportunities and formative assessment into every lesson. Recurring narrative characters representing a serialised approach to case-based learning that gives students a continuous story context rather than disconnected examples. It is a teaching model grounded in both cognitive science and professional authenticity.

His emphasis is always on the transferable: the strategic thinking, the professional communication, the critical media literacy that follows a graduate from one role to the next, across an entire career.

Consulting, Content, and Community.

Keith operates two active ventures alongside his academic work. The College Prof provides students when a universal design for learning platform. The very basis of it is to make education accessibile for everyone eliminating the typical barriers that prevent academic success. Because the platform offers the course reading material, the cost of textbooks in his class has been eliminated. The tool has tools ranging from persistent highlighting, to quizzes, to podcasts and video support encourage further exploration of the content. There is even an article level chatbot where students can ask the article questions. In essence, the platform is both the teacher and the tutor.

His content creation practice spans audio, video, and photography, and he actively develops WordPress plugins and web tools for both teaching and business purposes. He is a practitioner first, which is what makes his instruction credible and his research grounded.

He is also the host of a podcast exploring the intersection of education, leadership, and the ideas that challenge how institutions think about their purpose and their people.

A Little More About Keith

Teaching Philosophy

Keith’s teaching philosophy is rooted in access, clarity, accountability, and care. He believes students deserve learning environments where outcomes are explicit, expectations are fair, and every activity helps learners move toward professional confidence.

Beyond the Classroom

Through The College Prof Canada, podcasting, mentoring, and digital learning resources, Keith extends support beyond scheduled class time and creates practical pathways for students and graduates to keep growing.

Student Advocate

Inside and outside the classroom, Keith advocates for inclusive learning, employability, mentorship, and the belief that education should continue to support learners after graduation day.

Mentoring Students and Faculty

Keith’s teaching practice extends beyond course delivery. He mentors students through portfolio development, professional confidence, networking, presentation skills, workplace communication, and the transition from classroom projects to public-facing work. That mentorship is practical, direct, and grounded in the belief that students deserve guidance that continues after an assignment is submitted.

His mentoring also extends to faculty colleagues through resource sharing, digital workflow support, curriculum conversations, teaching technology, and collaborative problem-solving. He approaches mentorship as a responsibility of educational leadership, not as an optional extra.

“Students do not only need information. They need confidence, direction, and someone willing to help them see what is possible.”
“Mentorship is not about making the path easy. It is about helping people believe they can walk it.”
